HOW MARTIN LUTHER KING JR HAS PASSED HIS DREAM TO OUR FAMILY...

ME AND MY 15 YEAR OLD DAUGHTER LYRIC

For Black history month I wanted to share a VERY IMPORTANT story with my 15 year old daughter Lyric...It is a story of how Dr. Martin Luther King inspired my grandmother..
My grandmother, my mother and I all shared a dream that our daughters would grow up smart and empowered...

MARTIN LUTHER KING JR. was a great man... I remember sitting on the couch listening to my grandmother tell stories of her childhood growing up in Georgia and how Dr. King was a prominent part of her deciding to move to Chicago for a better life.... I am a mother now and in order to teach my children, I have to read as much as possible and then approach them with all the information I can gather....

So, for black History month, My daughter Lyric asked.."As a nation mom, do you believe we have moved forward"?

That is why I have to read all the time..(Smile)

I sat my daughter Lyric down and we had a nice discussion about her ideas , her feelings and the things that the school was teaching her about the legacy of Dr. King...

TALK ABOUT LIFE LESSONS, She was so eager to hear more...Not from a history book, but from me...I really miss my grandmother because she was smart and a great story teller..I just know that she would have told the story MUCH BETTER than I did...So, I sat my baby girl down and I talked with her about my grandmother, her life and her experiences....I told her of "Real Life" stories of the civil rights movements and the things my grandmother witnessed growing up in the South... After our talk she was more informed and from the look on her face...

I know that she will carry that dream that my grandmother once had for her own children....

So today I reflect on these things....

*My grandmother was inspired by Dr. Martin Luther King and set her dreams for a better life for her daughter, my mother.

*My mother was inspired by Dr. Martin Luther King and she was inspired by my grandmother..She set her dreams for a better life for her 3 kids...

*I was not only inspired by Dr. King, but also my grandmother, my mother and now my own 15 year old daughter is my inspiration...

.

It's amazing how far we've come as a nation since Martin Luther King Jr gave his speech almost 50 years ago. We still have a long way to go, but I truly believe that we are making progress....

  1. My daughter Lyric started walking at 9 months...From that day forward I knew that there was no stopping her....From the moment she was born, Lyric was like a sponge...She was ALWAYS trying to soak up knowledge in every waking moment. I was honored to share some history with her during black history month...One of the most amazing things about being a mother to this beautiful young woman, is passing on to her lessons to guide her...Or wait, is she guiding me? LOL
