GIVE your children your UNDIVIDED attention

LISTEN TO YOUR KIDS

I had some great parents. They had a unique way of raising us three girls. I have to admit that sometimes I felt as if I did not have a voice. My father would do most of the talking. I guess the rule in the Chandler house was "Children should be seen and not heard." That was not always easy for a child like me. Every thing in my eye was a debate and needed to be "Discussed." I laugh now at the age of 45. Our parents do the very best that they know how. Thank God for life experiences and the teachings of the bible. AMEN

Fast forward to the year 2014 and we are all so busy. Most of us are still in a struggle trying to find ways to spend time with our kids. That makes me sad. We have to make their well-being a priority. I realize that they not only need to have us around, they also need to have our TOTAL attention. Our kids need to know that we value them and their opinions matter. As a mom of 3 kids I have tried to do my best with this. I engage them in conversation with hopes of finding out if I am doing it right.

No one is perfect and there is no one way of doing things. You have to do what works in your own family. I would love to hear ways that have worked in your family setting. The number one area that I am working on is talking over my kids and interrupting them when they are trying to express a point. I never realized I was doing that. My kids told me I was doing that and I have made a conscious effort to change. That's all you can really do. Small subtle changes that make them feel loved and valued.

This not only helps them with their self-esteem, it also teaches them another valuable lesson about RESPECT. Yes, You are speaking and I will wait until you are finished to speak my opinion. We are talking, expressing ourselves and respecting our children. Thank you Father for your guidance.

  3. I love to spend time with my kids. My oldest is now 22 and I do not get to see him as often as I want to. They grow and they move away. Now my 17 year old is preparing or college in less than 8 months. I can barely believe how quickly time just rushes by. Try to make time for your kids so that they FEEL your love every time you walk into a room.
