Happy Martin Luther King Jr. day. If you have some time today, take a few moments to remember Martin Luther King Jr. He was not just as a great man, but a man who was also deeply rooted in his belief in Christ. My daughter Lyric is a junior at FAMU in Tallahassee and she is strong and loves to get involved in all school activities. This year she participated in a very special gathering to celebrate the life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. There were great speakers and the students were able to hear about this great man. The event was held today at FAMU in Gaither Gym.

The students were inspired by James Moran, PHD's resounding performance of Dr. King's "I Have a Dream" speech. My daughter was one of many in the audience hanging on every word. She remains a strong supporter of equal rights and I am so proud of her. As we celebrate this great man, I remind all three of my kids that each of us has a calling and assignment in this life. Each of us can make a difference in our lifetime. No deed to small I always say. It starts and begins with the lessons that we are teaching our kids. So good to see her getting involved and making a difference.

Whenever I tell my kids the story of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., I always relay that he was a true visionary. So sad that he is no longer with us and was murdered. His leadership continues to inspire my family and gives us courage. He rallied for peace, love, freedom, friendship and equality. Feels good to share his words today with my own kids and share his legacy once again. I truly believe that he helped make this world a better place! Martin Luther King Jr.'s legacy includes service to others. It is up to us to carry that legacy forward by committing to efforts that build a stronger community.

  1. There is something really amazing about being a mother. I have loved this job and I have watched my three kids in awe. How special it is to watch my daughter become a young woman so dedicated to her studies, friends, family and social issues. Praying for all of you.
