My daughter Lyric is beautiful and smart. She works hard to make change in this world. Not for fame, money or recognition. She does these AMAZING things because it’s her purpose and passion.

My daughter Lyric attends FAMU in Tallahassee. She is studying there to be a teacher and one day this beautiful young woman is going to change the world. I am so proud of her.

She is marching to the capital in response to the tragic shooting at Stoneman Douglas High. The FAMU students peacefully protested gun violence and advocated for gun regulation and safety. Last week’s shooting in Parkland, Florida was one of the most graphic and tragic events that these children have seen. They are so angry and sad and just want to do something to make a change. There are 17 people that are dead and there are more than a dozen others that are still hospitalized after the gunman opened fire at the school.

The FAMU campus is dedicated to make positive changes. I love the way that they encourage their students to get involved to make significant changes. That led to my daughter Lyric joining in the fight. She decided to join a group of students as they marched to the capitol. That day the FAMU

President Larry Robinson joined this group of dedicated students.

It was about 60 students all together that gathered that day. They started at Lee Hall and then they marched to the Capitol for the rally. It was a beautiful thing to see. I watched in awe as my daughter prepared for this event. My daughter was excited and determined to make a difference. There was a lot of people that decided to come out that day. The day was marked with empowerment, tears and a lot of great discussions. Great people coming together trying desperately to find a valid solution. The main topic was better gun control laws.

The day was absolutely amazing. The students from Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, delivered great speeches that touched so many people. The main focus was on Florida lawmakers in Tallahassee.

They spoke from the heart. They spoke elegantly and made the crowd roar. What a day! My daughter Lyric understands that change is necessary to stop these kinds of tragedies. The many speakers came together urging legislators to make some changes to end gun violence. Hopefully legislators will see that all of the students, teachers, marchers and parents are serious. They mean business. A change has to occur and lawmakers have to act NOW! In the end the march was very peaceful and the point was made very clear. These students have stepped up in such a bold and empowering way. As a parent I am proud to see all of the positive things that have come from this tragedy. Praying that my daughter Lyric will continue to fight the good fight. To stand up for the issues that she feels are important and that she understands that her voice is necessary to make positive changes in this world. I am so proud to be her mother.
