 care of a child when one or

more of the parents are unavailable. 

A man who acts as a father

 figure to a child usually when 

a father is not in the picture.

Hello everyone and welcome back to my blog. I am so glad you joined me today. Today I want to talk about Absentee fathers. Its really a close subject to my heart. As you know, I got divorced with two children still at home. Very quickly I had to learn how to be a single parent. It was apparent that I would get a child support check but nothing else. My kids needed something that I could not give them, they needed their father.

I just want to say a special shout out to all of the Surrogate Fathers out there. Thanks for stepping in and filling a much needed empty space! I am so grateful that I have a great man in my life. Paul stepped in and became the surrogate father to my three children. He made sure that Lyric had what she needed for college. He made sure she was OK when her apartment was robbed. He would send text messages to my son Elijah weekly to make sure he was all right. You can not imagine how much my children and I needed Paul in my life. And you know what, he helped me tremendously as I struggled to get my youngest son Patrick past all of his built up anger. My youngest son Patrick was very angry. He was affected by the divorce more than anyone including myself. He wanted his father to be present. He wanted his father to come to his concerts. He wanted to have father and son conversations with his father. All those things that I could not give to him. When he couldn't get any of those things he just got angry. I am so glad that he allowed Paul to mentor him slowly but in time it made a huge difference.

So grateful for my church family, his great mentors at his school, my daily prayers and most importantly for Paul. Paul stepped in and went to every concert. Paul stepped in and he loved my kids. Paul stepped in and became a rock for my son Patrick. He put the dates on his calendar and made my son Patrick a priority. That my friends is a real father. Time and involvement cannot be compared to a child support check. Some men grow up complaining about their own fathers not being around. And you know what, surprisingly they also become the very thing they hate. It was the worst time when my son Patrick was needing his father. Emotionally and physically absent fathers who pay monthly allowances are just as dead as an absentee father.

That is when surrogate fathers step in and preform like a rock star. So grateful for Paul he never once made excuses. He only made lasting memories with my son. Listen, Making excuses and not being present for your kids is borderline criminal in my book. A father is fully capable of asserting his own narrative in the lives of his children — if HE and he alone makes that choice. I don’t really care how unbearable he finds his child’s mother. No matter how famous you are on Facebook or how many accolades you receive from others, you will NEVER find lasting happiness or a meaningful relationship with your children if you are not PRESENT in their lives.

I tell you this story today so that you know that there is hope. There are really great men out there and there is a God. Keep praying. What about you? Have you met someone that stood in the gap of a absentee parent? If so, I would love to hear from you. Until then, I will be praying for you.
